DIY!Candle making from rapeseed wax
A very special material for making candles is rapeseed oil. The CO2-neutral natural material consists of a special mixture of hardened and non-hardened rapeseed oil, the finished candle burns down like a paraffin candle. The surface of the rapeseed oil candles is unusual and sensational. Especially in combination with the corresponding candle colors, the candle takes on an appearance reminiscent of pastel-colored porcelain.
Candle oils from rapeseed as a natural product with the best material properties
At 57 to 61 degrees, the melting point of rapeseed wax is slightly higher than that of stearin or paraffin and roughly corresponds to that of beeswax. The solidification temperature ranges between 54 and 58 degrees. Depending on the batch, the wax is whitish to yellowish in colour, which when mixed with candle colors results in the typical pastel final colour. Rapeseed wax is particularly suitable for the production of scented candles. The essential oils are well absorbed and the fragrances are preserved for a long time. When burning, the aroma can unfold completely. Rapeseed wax can be stored for at least two years at temperatures up to a maximum of 30 degrees, but it must be protected from moisture.
Pouring candles with rapeseed wax
Rapeseed wax is particularly suitable for casting candles. The pastilles can be melted in a water bath, colored if necessary and then further processed. A proportion of stearin can be added to increase the final hardness of the candle. It should be noted that rapeseed wax candles usually require somewhat thicker wicks. Ideally, you should test the correct wick strength on a sample candle. Rapeseed wax can also be used for drawn candles, but the wick strength should also be adjusted here. When making scented candles, it is important to ensure that the proportion of additives is not too high, as otherwise the hardening and burning properties of the finished candle can be impaired.
That's how it works!
1. Determination of the candle design
When making candles, you first have to consider whether you want to melt the wax directly in a pot, in a water bath (safest option) or in the microwave (simplest option). You also have to think about the shape of the candle, which can ideally be made of special silicone molds, mason jars or cans. Since our premium rapeseed wax has a neutral base tone, it is ideal for coloring with wax pastilles, pigment powder, wax paint, wax crayons or blocks or colored leftover candles and can also be refined with scented oils for candles. When it comes to the wick size, you should always choose 1-2 sizes larger for rapeseed wax.
2. Enamel variants
We would like to explain the three melting variants to you in more detail:
Directly in the pot: You put the wax in the pot and slowly heat the pastilles on medium heat. When the wax is liquid, remove the pot from the heat. NEVER leave the wax unattended and stay near the stove! It is also important that you do not heat the wax higher than 70-75°C because of the formation of bubbles. The optimum casting temperature is around 62-65°C. After pouring the candles, the pot can simply be cleaned with hot water.
Water bath (safest option): Heat a large pot with some hot water on the stove and melt the wax in a smaller pot placed in the large pot. Remove the wax from the heat after it has melted.
Microwave (easiest variant): The wax is placed in a bowl and slowly heated, whereby the consistency has to be checked again and again. The wax can boil and spatter quickly.
3. Working steps
After the lozenges have been melted, you can now stir the color and fragrance into the liquid wax. Then place the candle wick in the mold and close it. Wick holders are always helpful for fixing the wick in the middle. The remains of the wick can be cut off at the top. Then pour the liquid wax into the mold and let it cool down. After hardening, the candle is removed from the mold and the wick is cut off at the bottom of the candle
