Do it yourself! Pouring Candles from Rapeseed Wax
Rapeseed oil is a very special material for making candles. The CO2-neutral natural material consists of a special mixture of hardened and unhardened rapeseed oil, and the finished candle burns similarly to a paraffin candle. The surface of rapeseed oil candles is unusual and striking. Especially in combination with appropriate candle dyes, the candle acquires an appearance reminiscent of pastel-colored porcelain.
Rapeseed Candle Oils as a Natural Product with Best Material Properties
The melting point of rapeseed wax is slightly higher than that of stearin or paraffin, at 57 to 61 degrees Celsius, and is roughly equivalent to that of beeswax. The solidification temperature is between 54 and 58 degrees Celsius. The wax is whitish to yellowish in color, depending on the batch, which results in the typical pastel final tone when mixed with candle dyes. Rapeseed wax is particularly suitable for making scented candles. Essential oils are well absorbed, and the scents are preserved for a long time. When burning, the aroma can fully unfold. Rapeseed wax can be stored for at least two years at temperatures up to a maximum of 30 degrees Celsius, but must be protected from moisture.
Pouring Candles with Rapeseed Wax
Rapeseed wax is particularly suitable for pouring candles. The pastilles can be melted in a water bath, colored if necessary, and then processed further. To increase the final hardness of the candle, a proportion of stearin can be added. It should be noted that rapeseed wax candles usually require slightly thicker wicks. Ideally, the correct wick size should be tested on a sample candle. Rapeseed wax can also be used for dipped candles, and the wick size should also be adjusted here. When making scented candles, care must be taken not to make the proportion of additives too high, as this can impair the hardening and burning properties of the finished candle.
Here's how!
1. Defining the Candle Design
To make candles, you must first consider whether you want to melt the wax directly in a pot, in a water bath (safest option), or in the microwave (easiest option). You also need to think about the shape of the candle, which can ideally consist of special silicone molds, canning jars, or tins. Since our premium rapeseed wax has a neutral base tone, it is excellent for coloring with wax pastilles, pigment powder, wax dye, wax crayons or blocks, or colorful candle remnants, and can additionally be refined with fragrance oils for candles. For wick thickness, you should always choose 1-2 sizes larger for rapeseed wax.

2. Melting Options
Directly in the pot: Place the wax in the pot and slowly heat the pastilles on medium heat. When the wax is liquid, remove the pot from the stove. NEVER leave the wax unattended! The optimal pouring temperature is approx. 62–65°C.
Water bath (safest option): Heat a large pot with some hot water on the stove and melt the wax in a smaller pot placed inside the larger pot.
Microwave (easiest option): Place the wax in a bowl and heat it slowly, constantly checking the consistency.

3. Steps
After the pastilles have melted, you can stir color and scent into the liquid wax. Then insert the candle wick into the mold and close it. Pour the liquid wax into the mold and let it harden. After hardening, demold the candle and cut the wick at the bottom of the candle.
